Varadero is located two hours east of Havana. It’s on the Hicacos Peninsula, between the Bay of Cárdenas and the Florida Straits, some 140 kilometers east of Havana and near the eastern terminus of the Via Blanca highway. This beach can only be described in one word: breathtaking. It’s exactly what you imagine when you think of a Caribbean beach; you can’t go wrong with this one! Soft white sand that softly shelves and is ideal for little children. The shells along this stretch are beautiful, and we have found a lot. The crabs popping up and down into the holes was a lot of fun to watch. During our visit, we had a couple of red flag days, but jumping the surf was a pleasure. We were lucky in that the beach is also supervised by resort security, which meant that guests got the entire beach to themselves, which added to the enjoyment. It’s the same with postcards and television commercials. Photos and film do not do it justice; experiencing it in person is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We spent a lot of time in the water since it was so nice, clean, and relaxing. The resort supplied lots of reclining deck chairs as well as huge umbrellas to provide protection from the sun, but the heat still made the water a Great Escape and a welcome comfort that you found difficult to leave behind.
