After 396 years, the sun has set on the British monarchy’s reign over the Caribbean island of Barbados, with a handover ceremony on Monday, November 30th, 2021. As the clock struck midnight, the Royal Standard flag representing the Queen was lowered over a crowded Heroes Square in the capital city of Bridgetown as Dame Sandra Mason, 72, was sworn in by the chief justice and took the oath of allegiance as her country’s first president, 55 years after the island gained its independence from Britain. Jirie Caribbean extends our warmest congratulations to all Bajans on becoming the world’s newest republic. We wish you all the very best for the future, peace, happiness, and prosperity. We would also like to congratulate singer and entertainer, Rihanna, who was declared a national hero. The event was witnessed by Prince Charles who was on hand for the transition.
