Martello Tower
Martello Tower is the tallest building in Barbuda, the 17-meter-high, and it’s one of the most visited landmarks on the islands. During British rule, many towers were constructed all over the empire, and Martello Tower is thought to be the oldest of its type in the Caribbean. The tower stands on the beach alongside the river, walking distance from the south of the village, and was constructed in the early 19th century on the site of a Spanish fort that was demolished by Britishers. Surprisingly, when Hurricane Irma hit the islands in 2017, destroying 90 percent of Barbuda’s structures, The Martello Tower was one of those left standing intact. Today, you can visit and see the thick stone walls and gun platforms in their almost original shape and the ruins related to the previous fort. Although you won’t be able to climb the tower, you can go to the back section and sweep the views along the coast.
Darby Cave
The cave came into shape after the dissolution of the limestone, and today it’s known as Darby Cave, one of Barbuda’s most interesting natural phenomena. Darby Cave is more than 10 meters in diameter and this sinkhole is better described as a cave. Unlike the arid surrounding brush, the rich vegetation thriving inside gives a glimpse of the rain forest, with ferns, palms, and dense lianas revolving around the tree trunks. Visitors can find many birds in the foliage. You can also see the stalagmites under the overhang that has been created by the dripping water.
Pink Sand Beach
