Historical Facts about Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios is a small town located in the district of Saint Ann on the northern coast of jamaica. Tourists and locals often flock to Columbus Park, situated a few miles outside the city, where it’s believed that Columbus first came on land visited Spanish colonial buildings and maritime artifacts. On top of that, it offers several restaurants and some notable hotspots, including Dolphin Cove and Margaritaville, where visitors swim and interact with dolphins. The town has a significant area known as Fern Gully, which was resulted in the earthquake of 1907 that smashed one of the river beds. It covers around 5km of the rocky gorge where tourists can see over 500 types of ferns. During the British rule, this area was paved what is currently known as The Fern Gully Highway.
James Bond Fame
Most people when hearing the word “James Bond”, instantly thinks of the James Bond film, which was released in 1962. But, it was the residence of Miss Taro, acted by Zena Marshall, who was an assistant of Bond(Sean Connery) and in collaboration with the leading villain Dr. Julius (Joseph Wiseman). It has also appeared in the horror sequel Piranha II. In 2016, this home was portrayed on three episodes of Season 8 of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta reality show. The Rios Chico resort just walking distance from Ocho Rios was featured on the 20th season of ABC’s reality TV show The Bachelor. Many scenes of The Spawning were shot at the Mallards Beach-Hyatt, now the Sunset Jamaica Grande.
Hike to the Secret Falls
In Ocho Rios, you’ll have many options for hiking while on your excursion. Not only does it boasts waterfalls and bathes in the well-known waters of Blue Hole, but you’ll also have many options to explore the ferns as well. You don’t need to be an expert hiker to hike to the secret falls along the river, also known as Gully Falls. Your hike to the waterfall would be scenic, with several cliff jumping opportunities, natural swimming pools, rope swings along the way if you’re feeling adventurous.
Things you should keep in mind before visiting Secret Falls and Blue hole
Before you head out on Blue Hole adventure, make sure to put on comfortable shoes and dress as well! Consider wearing lightweight garments, and carry water shoes and swimwear since you’re likely to spend most of your time in the water, checking out nearby areas, and even rock climbing. If you forgot to bring your water shoes, you can purchase them on-site. You should also put a bug spray in your backpack since the area is situated in the breathtaking mountains, a natural habitat for bugs. Life jackets are also a great idea if you’re not a good swimmer, and in some areas, swimming pools get deeper and deeper, and without appropriate safety, you would be in trouble. If you don’t have your life jackets, they are available for purchase on-site.
