3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for the surface

2 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon kosher salt

2 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 1/2 cups vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the bread.

Mix in 1 cup of water with a wooden spoon until the flour mixture is smooth.

Turn out the dough on a lightly floured board and knead with your hands until smooth and elastic, sprinkle the surface with extra flour as needed.

Cover the dough with a towel and place it in a clean basin. Allow for at least 30 minutes of resting time.

Heat the oil in a big skillet over medium heat once the dough has rested.

Form little dough balls using your hands. Roll out the dough into rounds using a rolling pin or your palm on a lightly floured surface. Make sure they're not too thin.

Each piece of dough should be pierced many times with a fork or sharp knife before being dropped into the heated oil.

Allow to drain on paper towels or napkins.
